What the calculator measures
The model estimates annual vehicle and labor cost for the routine checks you enter. It does not assume monitoring eliminates every trip. Instead, use the result as the size of the cost pool you are trying to manage more intelligently.
For example, if remote information lets you avoid or combine only 25% of those trips, apply 25% to the estimated trip cost rather than claiming the entire amount as savings.
Build the ranch business case in layers

2. Time reallocation
An hour saved is only worth its wage rate if it truly reduces paid labor. On an owner-operated ranch it may be more useful to ask what higher-value work can replace that hour: fencing, grazing moves, marketing, maintenance or family time.
3. Risk-related value
Health alerts, location information and unusual-activity signals may help a producer investigate sooner, but putting a guaranteed dollar figure on that benefit requires validated event detection and real ranch outcomes. Track these results after deployment rather than inventing them in the proposal.
Simple ROI formula
Annual net benefit = verified annual savings + measured added value − annual operating cost.
Simple payback period = upfront investment ÷ annual net benefit when annual net benefit is positive.
For financed hardware, subscriptions or equipment with different service lives, a multi-year cash-flow model is better than simple payback.
