A sealed, ingestible monitoring sensor designed to collect rumen temperature and activity signals and connect each monitored animal to the Ranch Hand™ workflow.
What it is
A protected sensor that stays with the animal.
The Wandering Shepherd bolus is administered orally using the approved livestock application process. Once deployed, its internal placement keeps the monitoring hardware away from brush, feeders, mud and other exterior contact points.
The bolus sends animal-level information through the Herd IQ™ ranch network to Ranch Hand™, where producers can review trends, alerts and—when the GeoLocation system is selected—map context.

Rumen bolus FAQ
How is the bolus administered?
The bolus is administered orally with appropriate cattle handling and the approved application equipment. Customer instructions include the animal-eligibility and administration protocol for the production device.
Does the bolus need charging?
No routine charging is required. The production bolus is sealed and battery powered, with no external charging port.
How long does it remain in the animal?
The bolus is designed for retained in-rumen monitoring after proper administration to an eligible animal. Final retention, animal-size and service-life specifications are supplied with the production documentation.
Does the bolus contain GPS?
The standard Wandering Shepherd GeoLocation architecture does not depend on putting a GPS receiver in every bolus. Location is a system-level capability created by the bolus transmission, multiple Herd IQ™ GeoLocation gateways and the Ranch Hand™ platform.
What happens when an animal needs attention?
Ranch Hand™ can surface configured temperature, activity or boundary conditions so the producer can prioritize a physical check. The system supports ranch management and does not replace veterinary diagnosis or treatment.
