How Much Does a Cattle Monitoring System Cost?

A cattle monitoring system can include animal sensors, ranch gateways, software subscriptions, installation, connectivity and support. Comparing only the price of the animal device can therefore hide much of the deployment cost.

The six cost categories

1. Animal devices. How many cattle will carry sensors and what is the unit price?
2. Ranch infrastructure. Gateways, antennas, mounts, power and any site-specific hardware.
3. Software. Per-animal, per-site or tiered subscriptions.
4. Backhaul/connectivity. Cellular, satellite or other internet costs where applicable.
5. Deployment. Planning, installation, travel, training and commissioning.
6. Ongoing operations. Support, replacement hardware and any maintenance requirements.

Cost per monitored animal is not the whole ROI

A system may be worthwhile because it changes travel, checking time, response priorities or information quality—but those benefits should be calculated from your own operation. Avoid assigning generic dollar values to disease detection, mortality, reproduction or production improvements without field evidence.
